Artistic Manners

We lost cable during the recent hurricane which meant no phone, no internet, no tv and plenty of time to read. I had the chance to read quite a bit of The Business of Being an Artist by Daniel Grant (fourth edition). He mentions basic etiquette at artistic events and I think it bears repeating. Essentially what he said was basic manners required;

When attending a show or opening it is the time to congratulate the artist, have discussions about the work presented (quietly) and enjoy what is being presented. It is not the time to monopolize the artists time, have loud, drawn-out critiques of art or eat too much. Attending any artistic event is about the art and the artist, supporting their efforts by your presence. It is not about you.

In a world where we have been conditioned to making things about ourselves it was a good reminder.
